ભગવાન ધન્વંતરિ હિન્દુ પૌરાણિક કથાઓમાં આયુર્વેદના જનક અને ચિકિત્સાના મુખ્ય દેવ માનવામાં આવે છે, જેઓ ભગવાન વિષ્ણુના અંશાવતાર છે. પવિત્ર સમુદ્ર મંથન દરમિયાન તેઓ પોતાના ચાર હાથમાં અમૃત કલશ, આયુર્વેદ ગ્રંથ, શંખ અને ઔષધિઓ લઈને પ્રગટ થયા હતા. તેમણે સંસારના કલ્યાણ અને અસાધ્ય રોગોના નિવારણ માટે આયુર્વેદનું દિવ્ય જ્ઞાન આપ્યું હતું. દર વર્ષે ધનતેરસના પવિત્ર દિવસે દેશભરમાં તેમની પૂજા-અર્ચના કરીને 'રાષ્ટ્રીય આયુર્વેદ દિવસ' તરીકે ઉજવવામાં આવે છે. Lord Dhanvantari is revered in Hindu mythology as the father of Ayurveda and the physician of the gods, considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. During the legendary Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), he emerged holding the pot of celestial nectar (Amrit Kalash), Ayurvedic scriptures, a conch, and healing herbs. He bestowed the divine wisdom of Ayurveda upon the world to alleviate human suffering and disease. His appearance is celebrated every year on Dhanteras as National Ayurveda Day across the nation.
